Google subway map for NYC-area & Newark
This Google map tells you what subways to take.
Like most map programs, you select a beginning and end, and the map describes a route. In this case, it shows which subways to take (including all 4 boroughs covered by the MTA, all PATH destinations, and the Newark CIty Subway). It also offers a time estimate (predicated in part on what time of day you'll take the trip). The design is simple, the execution swift and detailed.
The map would be more handy if it worked on a cel phone or Palm Pilot, but it does not. This FAQ page explains why.

That's the best Google map "hack" i've ever seen.
I agree - it certainly makes planning a trip straightforward, doesn't it? Please spread the word about it. This really should be supported (but isn't) by the MTA and Port Authority, and expanded to include bus and ferry options. The current implementation really shows the way, but much more can be done.
Have U tried www.publicroutes.com, they have a larger coverage area in USA, more than any trip planner out there.....
Thanks, Ape! Here's 'Ape's' public transportation website.
