Top ten rejected Jersey state slogans

Our top ten entries in the competition for a new state slogan.

10) It's Jersey: "Got a problem with that?"

9) The New New Jersey: "Now with 10% less toxic waste!"

8) New Jersey: "We'll look the other way."

7) New Jersey: "The Sopranos State."

6) New Jersey: "We had a gay governor, so what?"

5) New Jersey: "Be sure to pick up a complimentary chemical drum on your way out."

4) Yo, Joisey: "Politicos and wiseguys, bada-bing!"

3) New Jersey: " 'cause New York sucks."

2) New Jersey: "Laugh it up, we got more money than your state."

1) New Jersey: "Shoot squealers, not bears."

The slogan they SHOULD have picked, but didn't.

Actually, if we were (seriously) going to create a state campaign, we'd do something along these lines:

'We're New Jersey', featuring the many talented and accomplished citizens (in their shops, homes, and businesses) who do NOT seem to be waiting for their Sopranos walk-on role. That image, the image of corrupt politics (although somewhat put into perspective by Louisiana these days) and the image of pollution-belching factories are the state's biggest (PR) problems.

Our previous attempt at a local slogan.

PhillyBurbs picks up a few gems, including: "New Jersey: Where the Martians Landed.", and "Most of Our Elected Officials Have Not Been Indicted."

Rejected slogans from other states.

A great state slogans parody from Diesel Sweeties.

Our valiant attempt to salvage the existing slogan

Regional humor from around the country.

{UPDATE: The Barista appeals for more ideas. Mike Kelly's story. Peter Applebome, in the New York Times, said: "O.K., so maybe New Jersey didn't hit the marketing jackpot when it paid a New York image and branding consultant $260,000 for research and a new slogan and ended up with the Rodney Dangerfield of state boasts." Thanks for the mention, Peter. WFMU submits: "WFMU & You: Purr-fect Together!" and, for those who live here but are still reluctant to admit it: "New Jersey: Just Passing Through". And here's the Governor's official appeal.}

Related: At least "New Jersey - Bend over and smile" would be honest.

I'd better warn you, I told some acquaintances around here about you and they armed me with West Virginia jokes.

Q) Why don't they do a CSI in West Virginia?

A) Because there are no dental records, and the DNA's all the same.

I do like the 'Sinatra' slogan though. Any more?
