The Politics of evacuation (part one)
The calvary has arrived and the mopup has begun. Perhaps, like some, you're now focused on 'too little, too late'.
So you think you know who screwed up, bigtime, in New Orleans?
Odds are, you don't. But you will, as these stories work their way up (down?) from the blogospehere to mainstream media.
It turns out that Mayor Nagin, who screamed to the nation that he desperately needed some sort of transportation to save his city's people, had a fleet of buses at his disposal the whole time. Know what's coming next? We do:
1) Once these stories get around (and boy, are they getting around) those who survived Katrina are going to begin a wave of lawsuits that will make the asbestos-lawsuit industry seem like an opening act. They'll try to sue the Feds (because that's where the money is), but when that fails they'll settle for the city and state. We also expect criminal charges to be brought against Mayor Nagin for homicidal negligence. Don't think this hasn't occurred to him - it's the real reason for his shrill indictment of the Bush Administration. And don't think it's not going to go down just this way. We saw suits considered for 9/11, although the NYC cops and mayor were magnificient and the WTC's architects and builders were blameless. (Most of the suits never got anywhere.) It'll happen in N'orleans, and the suits will stick. If the city's not bankrupt now, it soon will be. They'll go after the state, as well.
Those who hate Karl Rove already will find fresh reason to do so. Rove will work behind the scenes to help organize and expedite these suits. The quicker this happens, the quicker the hot spot moves off the President.
2) If things aren't bad enough: What happens when the intemperate Nagin has to negotaite with Federal officials for more aid once the last bunch of citizens are resettled? Think Bush is going to forgive and forget once the TV crews have gone home? Think he feels like handing a few billion over to one of the most politically corrupt states in the nation? (Louisiana makes Jersey's corruption look like shoplifting at the corner bodega.) Result: New Orleans gets screwed, once again, by its mayor.
We'd love to see New Orleans back on its feet. But the real storm hasn't even started yet.
The meme hits the mainstream: We just heard CNBC mention for the first time that lawsuits may be on the way. Wizbang also sees suits coming.
{UPDATE: Not all Nagin's buses sat idle. One was pressed into service - by a young hero who may now be charged with theft.}
{UPDATE 2: The Anchoress expands on the School Bus scandal.}

Nagin already thinks the black helicopters are gearing up to come cap his ass.
I think after the courts are done with him, he'll wish they had, Thanks for the link.
tc: Thanks for sharing that link. Here's a quote:
"So this 10.8 billion dollar relief bill Congress is getting ready to pass, I hope they pass it quick because we're going to need some of it," Mayor Nagin said.
I can't imagine giving his man a few billion to reward him for his gleaming criminal malfeasance.
Also, just read today that LA Gov. Blanco is STILL refusing to allow the federal government to take over security and relief resources. Washington Post Story here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/03/AR2005090301680.html
Worse still, all the lefties who say they won't give a nickel to help relief because Bush is in charge, the hurricane is his fault and the people in affected states voted for Bush.

A new low even for the left. Sick!
You wouldn't have any way of knowing this, Mike, and it's a bit unusual, but I try to stay clear of from the usual political-spectrum-bashing that plagues most sites. (Even though I like the word 'wingnut' as much as anyone.) It doesn't change any minds, and it gets in the way of establishing dialogue. However, I do appreciate your frustration, and your comment. Anyone who can craft a phrase like "gleaming criminal malfeasance" is OK in my book. (If you go to Mike's site you'll notice that he uses other dandy but discarded phrases, such as "whippersnapper". We love to pull old nomenclature off the shelf and give it a whirl. Maybe start a trend.) Thanks for the links, as well.
All rhetoric one way or the other aside, in this case we do have confidence the facts will come out. This puppy is going to court, which is as close to a "no spin zone" as one can hope to find in this world. Already, I'm ready to bang the gavel (so Nagin is lucky I'm not). The Feds acted with due haste, despite some PR blunders. Getting a convoy on the spot on 3 days is pretty impressive. You want to quibble about shaving a few hours off, fine, but it will never play as gross negligence in a court of law. What Nagin did, though, and what others in the famously corrupt Louisiana system probably contributed to, was criminal, malicious, and actionable. His ass is indeed grass.
Mr. Snitch: Wish I knew how you avoid having the Bush bashers descend on you... I have to take a bath after responding to some of the verbal sewage that floods more than New Orleans at the moment.
And more on New Orleans with this excellent background post Flopping Aces found:

P.S. Yeah, I guess I did pay attention to the vocabulary lessons in school. Always been fascinated by the alliteration words and word combinations can create.
I try to avoid using "wingnut." But I do like shibboleths, and nattering and calumny....
Used to play a little game with friends, where you come up with interesting words that start with the letter "p." Plethora of potentially potent "p" words in the English vocabulary.
"Nattering nabobs of negativity." (Spiro Agnew, on the press. I guess with a moniker like his you get articulate or perish.)
